The one that laughs a beat late, mirrors whoever’s talking, borrows their slang, agrees with things you don’t agree with. It works. Nobody notices. And then you’re home, alone, ears ringing, and it hits you that you spent the whole night being a decent impression of someone who belongs there. Now or Later built “Alien” out of exactly that gap, and they dedicate it to everyone living in it.

It’s a smart song to hand to a guest verse, and smarter to hand it to this one. Ded Stark comes from the American emo-rap side of the same emotional territory, and the feature reads less like a co-sign than like a second voice confirming the feeling travels. The dislocation in “Alien” isn’t a Saigon problem or a US problem. It’s a room problem, and there are rooms everywhere.

As with everything Now or Later have put out, the record was tracked at Ket’s studio with Kiệt producing, a working relationship that’s held across their entire catalog and shows in how consistent their sound has stayed while the songs themselves get bolder. Phạm Thuận directed and handled the camera as D.O.P., then cut the thing himself alongside Khanh Trần. Nam Anh operated camera with Cong Binh on focus, gear came from BPCine, and Bong_Hwa, Janeyyy, and yat_twan kept the production moving on the day.The artwork comes courtesy of Hardy.

There’s a particular honesty in naming the feeling this plainly. Plenty of bands write about loneliness. Fewer write about the specific humiliation of trying, of doing the work to fit, doing it well, and still knowing it was never real. “Alien” sits in that discomfort. Enjoy the track across all streaming platforms.

Saigon emo outfit Now or Later share “Alien,” a track for anyone who has ever performed their way through a room and gone hollow the second the door closed behind them.
