Mish.Rec, the bassist behind Nha Trang’s 7/4 Surfers, steps out solo with debut album “Undercurrent,
trading jam energy for layered synths, dream pop drift, and psychedelic loops. Produced alongside his band’s drummer Nikita Ptashko, it’s a DIY record that moves like a motorbike through Vietnam’s alleys and opens like the beach at dusk.
Where 7/4 Surfers lean into the unpredictability of jam-based music, “Undercurrent” takes the opposite approach. Dream-pop haze and psychedelic drift sit at its center, shaped by repetition rather than improvisation. It’s the kind of music that rewards having your headphones in and nowhere urgent to be, whether you’re weaving through a crowded alley or watching the light change over the water somewhere up the coast.
The result is a DIY record that sounds considered without sounding overworked. The same spirit that runs through the band’s output carries over here, just refracted through a different lens. “Undercurrent” is out now on all major streaming platforms. Find it and press play somewhere with a view.
