Based in Hanoi, Thetans are a four-piece post-proto-punk band formed at the tail end of 2020 by a gang of sonic outlaws from the UK, Australia, and Serbia. Armed with an eclectic mix of synths, distortion, and unfiltered energy, the band carved their identity as an electro-acoustic human body energy music(?) outfit — their own way of saying they’re unlike anything you’ve heard before.

From the start, Thetans have refused to take themselves too seriously, while putting out music that seriously slaps. With a blend of high-octane punk, wired synth flourishes, and chaotic live energy, the band embraces spontaneity and DIY spirit as core values.

Thetans

Thetans describe their sound as “high energy post-proto-punk with a synth (sometimes)”, but in practice, it’s a wild and joyful sonic assault — abrasive yet groovy, cheeky yet sincere. Their music is built on raw guitar lines, energetic rhythms, off-kilter melodies, and lyrics soaked in irony, protest, and punchlines.

While rooted in punk ethos, Thetans seamlessly fuse lo-fi production aesthetics with playful synth textures, creating an electrifying and slightly absurd sound that’s both danceable and destructive.

In 2024, Thetans released their debut EP, Highly-Enriched Vibes,” which delivered four tracks of adrenaline-soaked punk energy, much to the “eargasmic pleasure” of their tens of dedicated fans. The release was accompanied by the unforgettable music video for “Girls Say Yes (To Boys Who Say No),” a chaotic visual riot that doubles as commentary on expat life in capital Hanoi. Their follow-up EP, Worldwide Vibes, expands their sonic palette while holding tight to their garage-punk roots.

Thetans have built their reputation not through mainstream festivals or high-budget campaigns, but through their omnipresence in Hanoi’s sticker-covered dive bars, bia hơi joints, and toilet doors. Their live shows are spontaneous explosions of energy — loud, sweaty, fun, and absolutely unforgettable.

While they jokingly claim to be “the most gloriously random band you’ve never heard of,” Thetans have played countless venues across Hanoi, leaving behind their imprint one sticker and feedback loop at a time. Their slogan? Number One Punk Band in Vietnam. Bold? Yes. Wrong? Maybe not.

Thetans show no signs of slowing down. Their mission remains as chaotic and catchy as ever — to spread noise, joy, and immaculate vibes wherever they can plug in a synth and crank an amp.

Whether you find them at your favorite bar or scrawled on the wall of a bathroom stall, one thing’s certain: Thetans are here, and you will feel the rapture.
